Essential Oils for Digestive Issues

Aromatherapy Relieves Diarrhea
Diarrhea is a common symptom, usually caused by ingestion of contaminated water or food. It can last 1 or 2 days and go away without treatment, but can be very uncomfortable and prevent you from doing outdoor activities.

Cinnamon essential oil (cinnamomum zeylanicum) stimulates the digestive system and can relieve indigestion, colic, and diarrhea. It can be used in bath or massage oil1 or by diluting one drop in a teaspoon of honey or a cup of hot, non-boiling water2. It can also be used externally to massage the abdomen.

Ginger (zingiber officinalis) essential oil can also relieve colic and diarrhea. External use: Dilute 2 drops in a tablespoon of vegetable oil and massage in a clockwise direction over the abdomen.

Along with aromatherapy, it is imperative to drink plenty of water, as diarrhea can lead to dehydration.

To combat constipation, use ginger essential oil (zingiber officinalis). In general, this essential oil is effective in treating various stomach problems such as indigestion, nausea and even bloating1. It can also be taken at the rate of one tablespoon of oil dripped before meals.

Fennel essential oil (feniculum vulgare) can also help fight constipation by acting on the digestive system. It also provides relief for everything from indigestion and constipation to cramping, colic, nausea, gas and hiccups. It helps the body eliminate toxins through its tonic action on the liver, kidneys, spleen and entire digestive system1. You can massage a few drops of this essential oil diluted in vegetable oil on your abdomen, or take it internally.

Ginger (zingiber officinalis) essential oil has calming properties for mild upset stomach, nausea and vomiting1. You can dilute 2 drops of this essential oil in a tablespoon of vegetable oil and massage into your abdomen in a clockwise direction to relieve digestive problems2.

Peppermint essential oil (mentha x piperita) is one of the best essential oils for treating digestive issues such as indigestion, stomach pain, nausea and vomiting1. In the latter case, simply taking a sniff at the cap can make you feel better. You can also put a drop of oil on the bottom of your nose, leave a mark on your tongue, or put a drop on melted sugar under your tongue. If it is difficult to digest after a meal, you can dilute 1 drop of peppermint essential oil in 25cL of hot water, add a little honey, stir well, and drink it once. Discomfort is often relieved immediately after an erection1,3. A 2013 study found that spearmint (mentha spicata) and peppermint essential oils were effective in relieving nausea and vomiting in chemotherapy patients.

Reduce Bloating with Aromatherapy

Excessive gas, heaviness, bloating, rattling, and bloating in the abdomen can manifest in many ways and can be very unpleasant.

They applied peppermint essential oil 3 times a day for 6 weeks. The results showed that the essential oil was more effective than the placebo1: Pain was estimated at 4.94 in the essential oil treatment group compared to 6.15 in the placebo group.

A group of several studies, nine of which looked at the association of essential oils of peppermint and caraway (carum carvi) with indigestion3, concluded that symptoms improved in 60% to 95% of patients, depending on the study. Coriander essential oil is known to be effective in relieving tension, mood and functional indigestion. Massage the stomach and abdomen with 5 to 10 drops of essential oil in a clockwise direction for 3 weeks each time symptoms return4.
