5 Natural Remedies for the Flu and Common Cold

Cold and flu-like illnesses are common in winter. However, if they are already infected, they can be avoided or alleviated thanks to simple and natural remedies!
Echinacea helps reduce the severity and duration of cold symptoms, such as congestion, runny nose, sore throat, headache, weakness, or chills. Native Americans have used it for centuries to treat respiratory infections. Echinacea also protects against the flu.

Echinacea is best taken orally in the form of:

Infusion. Soak in boiling water for 10 minutes and add 1 g of dry root. Take 1 to 6 times daily.
from decoction. Boil 1 gram of echinacea root in 1 cup of water for 5-10 minutes. Up to 3 cups per day.

  • Dyes. Take 3ml to 4ml of Echinacea 3 times a day.

Natural Remedies Flu Cold Black Elderberry
Black elderberry is an effective natural remedy for flu. A study conducted in the 90s showed that subjects who received black elderberry extract for flu saw their condition improve after 2 days, compared to 6 days for those who received a placebo. Black elderberry is also considered an effective way to prevent colds.
Black elderberry can be eaten in flower or berry form. There is a ready-to-use black elderberry preparation. The following indications apply to elderflower:

Infusion. Soak 3 to 5 grams of dried flowers in 150 ml of boiling water for 10 to 15 minutes. Drink three glasses a day.
Liquid extract (1:1, g/ml). Take 1.5 to 3 ml of black elderberry extract daily.
Tincture (1:5, g/ml). Take 2.5 to 7.5ml daily.

Natural Remedies for Flu Cold l Andrographis paniculata
Andrographis has been used for centuries to treat fevers and respiratory infections. It is a plant that cannot be found in its original form in Western countries, and it is available in the form of tablets or capsules that contain 4% to 6% andrographolide, one of the active substances of Andrographis paniculata.

For now, it’s still recommended for treating respiratory infections like the flu or the common cold. It is recommended to take 400 mg of Andrographis paniculata standardized extract containing 4-6% andrographolide per day to prevent cold or flu.

Natural Remedies Flu Cold Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus has beneficial effects on respiratory inflammation. It helps relieve cold and flu symptoms, including cough and sore throat.

Internally, eucalyptus is used for:

Infusion. Soak 2 to 3 grams of dried eucalyptus leaves in 150ml of boiling water for 10 minutes, 2 cups per day.
Tincture (1:5). 10-15 ml each time, 2 times a day.
essential oils. Apply 2 to 6 drops of eucalyptus essential oil to a neutral lozenge daily. This method is not recommended for young children or pregnant women.
inhale. Pour 4 to 6 drops of essential oil into the inhaler and add to 150ml of boiling water. Repeat this action up to 3 times a day.

It might seem surprising that garlic is also an effective remedy for cold and flu symptoms because it helps treat respiratory infections. In this case it can be used in different ways:

fresh garlic. Consume the equivalent of 4 cloves of garlic (16 grams) daily to prevent colds.
dried garlic. Taking 2-4 grams of dried garlic powder, 3 times a day, can prevent colds.
dyeing. Take 2 to 4 ml 3 times a day if the cold has been infected.
