Baking soda has been grabbing a lot of headlines lately on beauty blogs and cooking sites. Natural and versatile, bicarbonate is widely used in dental care, especially for whiter teeth. Here are our tips for properly brushing your teeth with baking soda.
What is Baking Soda?
Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, is an ecological and natural substance present in many elements: human body, ocean, etc. Regardless of caustic soda or sodium carbonate, these are very dangerous chemicals: what they all have in common is the name.
Bicarbonate is a natural, eco-active ingredient, but also very powerful. It replaces cleaners and purifiers with many products, which is why it is used in so many ways: shampoos, deodorants, whitening toothpastes, household cleaners, absorbs and retains odors, and more.
Baking soda is a soluble white powder that is odorless and very easy to use. It is a completely biodegradable substance that is harmless to health and the environment: it is therefore an excellent natural recipe for white and healthy teeth.
Why use baking soda to brush your teeth?
Bicarbonate is used in many beauty recipes, but it’s best known for its effects on teeth. Sodium bicarbonate helps to cleanse the mouth and achieve a deep cleanline: it dissolves food particles, reduces tartar formation and rebalances the pH of the mouth.
For this reason, baking soda is ideal for cleaning your mouth, especially against canker sores and other oral infections. Due to its cleansing properties, baking soda also helps prevent bad breathing problems.
Sodium bicarbonate is also known for its ability to whiten teeth: its abrasive formula smoothes tooth surfaces and imparts the beautiful yellow coloration caused by food or tobacco. It gives teeth a real boost in no time.
Proper use of baking soda to whiten teeth
There are several ways to use baking soda on your teeth. You can add a little powder to your toothpaste and do classic brushing. For added efficiency, you can brush your teeth with your regular toothpaste and then with baking soda. To do this, make a paste by mixing baking soda with a little water and brush your teeth with it. You can also dab baking soda paste on your teeth and let it sit for 5 minutes for a quick whitening treatment.a
Note that baking soda is an abrasive product and you should only do this once or twice a week. Regular use of baking soda can damage tooth enamel and make them more sensitive. Therefore, extreme care must be taken when using baking soda, as once the enamel is damaged, it cannot be undone. Regular use of bicarbonate may also irritate the gum. Also, if you have sensitive teeth and gum, it’s best to avoid baking soda.
Make Baking Soda Toothpaste
Would you like to replace your current toothpaste with a natural toothpaste that harnesses the benefits of baking soda? Nothing could be easier than:
Mix 8 drops of peppermint essential oil with a tablespoon of baking soda
Then add 3 tablespoons of powdered white clay
Mix gently until you get a smooth paste
Apply this toothpaste to a wet toothbrush and you will have a natural, purifying and whitening toothpaste. You can keep it for a week, or even two weeks if you keep it in the fridge.
