Around the mouth wrinkles are indentations that form at the corners of the lips and spread to the cheeks, chin, and sides of the nose. The mouth then takes on a drooping and stern look.
These wrinkles are a natural result of facial aging: they usually appear around age 40 and then become more pronounced with age.
Wrinkles Around Your Mouth: What You Need to Know
Wrinkles form when our bodies start to slow down the production of proteins and molecules like collagen, hyaluronic acid or elastin, all of which are responsible for the skin’s firm, smooth and plump appearance.
The first areas affected by this phenomenon are usually the eyes and lips. The contours of the lips, like the contours of the eyes, are made of tiny skins that are particularly sensitive to the formation of fine lines.
Wrinkles around the mouth are often more pronounced in women due to genetics, but also because men can easily hide them under beards.
At what age do lip lines usually appear?
Wrinkles around the mouth usually form around age 40 and then become more pronounced with age. They sometimes appear earlier (from age 30) depending on facial structure and anatomy.
Aging causes different phenomena that lead to the formation of these wrinkles:
The face is subjected to gravity every day. When the tissue no longer has enough tension to resist this force (due to loss of collagen and elastin), the skin sags and sags downward;
Loss of lipids in the subcutaneous fatty tissue (subcutaneous tissue) can cause volume loss in this part of the face;
Missing jaws; a tenfold problem for people who lose teeth or wear dentures.
Other causes and risk factors
Wrinkles around the mouth appear and become more pronounced with age, especially under the influence of gravity and sagging skin, but other factors can also make these lines worse.
Repeated contraction of the muscles at the corners of the mouth, especially the DAO (Depressor Auguli Oris) from the corners of the mouth to the mandible (the mandible next to the jaw). These movements tend to pull the corners of the lips downward;
genetics and heredity;
excessive exposure to sunlight;
tobacco;
weight change;
poor diet/hydration;
lack of sleep.
different wrinkles around the mouth
Wrinkles are divided into two categories:
expression line;
Static wrinkles.
The first is caused by repeated contractions of the facial muscles, while the second has to do with gravity and loss of elasticity in the skin.
There are three different types of wrinkles around the mouth:
Circumferential wrinkles, also known as “sun wrinkles” or “barcodes” (expression wrinkles): these correspond to the small vertical wrinkles between the upper lip and nose;
Bitter wrinkles (static wrinkles): these wrinkles start at the corners of the lips and descend to the chin;
Nasolabial folds (static wrinkles): These correspond to the two folds that obliquely connect the sides of the nose to the corners of the lips.
Grandma’s home remedies for reducing wrinkles around the mouth
There are some non-invasive and inexpensive natural ways to reduce wrinkles around the mouth.
These home remedies don’t do miracles, but they can help tone the lower face and keep wrinkles from deepening.
However, it is important to remember that aesthetic medicine and cosmetics are still the most effective means (especially injections of hyaluronic acid and botox).
facial gymnastics
These exercises are especially effective in reducing wrinkles around the mouth in the long run, provided they are done rigorously and regularly.
exercise 1
Smile by exaggerating the smile.
Manually lift the corners of the lips with two fingers.
Repeat several times.
exercise 2
Open your mouth wide and pronounce the letters “o”, “a” and “u” exaggeratedly.
Repeat as many times as possible.
exercise 3
Under stress, the mouth may contract nervously, amplifying the effects of gravity.
Several times a day, pay attention to your mouth posture and force yourself to relax if your lips are tight.
You can even counteract the effects of gravity by drawing a smile instantly the moment you think about it.
facial massage
Like facial gymnastics, facial massage must be repeated regularly (daily if possible) to be effective.
exercise 1
Use fingertips to massage the entire surface of the lower face in small circular motions to release tension and improve circulation.
Use your fingertips to stretch each wrinkle outward from the face.
exercise 2
Use three fingers of one hand to make small pressure movements on the lips and its contour.
Repeat until you feel a little unpleasant.
Homemade Anti-Aging Face Mask
To nourish and condition lip contours, we recycled items from our kitchen cupboards into an anti-aging mask.
Banana pulp nourishes the skin: Crush a very ripe banana and add a teaspoon of lemon juice. Apply the mixture to the lip contour, leave on for ten minutes and rinse;
Skin-softening yogurt and honey: Mix a tablespoon of honey, yogurt and sugar and apply to the mouth and its contours in circular motions. Leave on for ten minutes, then rinse off.
vegetable oil
The nourishing, toning and rebalancing properties of certain botanical oils make them excellent allies in reducing wrinkles around the mouth:
argan oil;
Rosehip Oil;
evening primrose oil;
borage oil;
coconut oil ;
sweet almond oil.
Apply a small amount of vegetable oil to lips and contours, massage until fully absorbed.
